My partner, painter Richard Kurtz & I spent a nice afternoon with photographer Photographer Jacqueline Jax Manhoff & her sweet shy photogenic dog Sophie.

Jax & I are close in age & we share may of the same passions & culture heroes. We each started as street photographers in the 80s.

We have each traveled to & photographed in India.

Jax & I share some of the same influences to our work

like Diane Arbus, Patti Smith, Man Ray, Eastern Spirituality, the culture of sexuality, Robert Mapplethorpe & cartooning.

“When I was young, my mother was a photographer. I begged her to take down her Diane Arbus book,

the one with the twins on the cover.”

“In the seventh grade, I was chosen to take a special photography class. Our assignment was to take portraits of our families.

I took the pictures with my father’s Yashica Mat 2 1/4 camera. These are my earliest portraits.

As a young adult, I traveled to India to photograph.

They say many Leica’s are at the bottom of the Ganges River, the last possession before renunciation.”

“My father took a photograph of me when I was six.

I am sitting on his Honda 350 motorcycle.

I am very serious.

I am facing forward with my square camera bag around my shoulder, inside is my Kodak Instamatic.”

Many years ago Jax & I worked together on an image. Jax did the henna {that she learned from Our tattoo artist friend Prakash} on our friend Alia Munn’s beautiful pregnant belly & I made the photo. It was super cool to work again with JAX on this Blog piece.

I feel blessed to have my photographic sister friend JAX in my life.

Your generosity never ceases to amaze me. You let all of us artists be really SEEN. I don’t know Jacqueline, but I got a strong sense of her. Thank-you for letting us know more about her.
