My partner, artist Richard Kurtz and I were experiencing a wild and profound art retrospective at MACBA in Barcelona by artist Antoni Miralda titled, MIRALDA MADEINUSA when we met artist, Alicia Rios. Alicia is a food artist who makes edible hats, books and cities. She is a long time and dear friend of Miralda.
We were enchanted by Alicia & I asked her if we could photograph her.
She agreed & invited us to her home in Madrid, where we were traveling next.
Alicia was a personal chef for John Cage and worked with Pedro Almadovar.
She is and expert on Olive Oil and Spanish Food.
She has written many books & has performed all over the world.
Richard and I were blessed to spend an afternoon with Alicia.
We ate wonderful food, drank wine, and listened to her stories.
“Olive oil is the ever present guide in all of my wanderings.
Olive oil is the thread that ties together all of my searches, researches and inspirations.
As an olive oil taster I seek out its sensory qualities. As an historian of olive oil culture I have published either with Lourdes March or on my own the results of my investigations in the form of books and articles.
As a stylist, I have produced considerable graphic material.
As an artist, oil is the basis of all my performances, actions and reactions.”
